Post subject: CD Drives
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)

Ever since upgrading to XP, my CD r/w and DVD drives have
been functioning oddly. It almost appears that they have
been reversed somehow in the software, so the DVD driver
for instance acts as the CD drive. An example; before, I
could play music in the DVD drive, and it would
automatically load. Now not only will it not load
automatically, I can't even use a CD in it. The CD
burner, meanwhile, cannot be recognized by programs.
I know this all sounds vague, but I'm not smart enough to
really explain this well. I went into the bios to see if
they were controlled there, but they aren't. So I'm now
out of ideas. Anyone have any thoughts?
My thanks in advance.

Dale
PS- With SP2 added in, they seem to act even more
strangely!

Hi Dale,
It's frustrating isn't it.
I, and many others in this forum have the same or similar problems.
I have had problems with my cdrw and dvdrw. When putting in a disc - music
or files- they are unable to be read. But sometimes they can be - just wierd.
After searching through a lot of questions and answers regarding similar
problems there seem to be a number of suggestions. (you mention no auto play
- if you hav not tried, trie this - right click on the drive and click
autoplay - not sure if it will work, but have a few 'answers' that mention
this). Or try searching in the search section above with words like
'autoplay', 'drives not working' etc, you'll see a number of q's and a's.
I, only tonight, seem to have found a way around in getting the drives to
read the contents of disc's.
*before* logging into your user name, put a disc in each drive and then log
in.
I have done this with each user (4 of us) and it has worked each time. worth
a try.
it' not the 100% answer but at least for the moment i can use disc's.
