Two of the three computers here at home did the same when
I installed XP upgrades over W2000. Replacing my Liteon
DVD-ROM with a Liteon DVD+/-RW cured mine, but the other
computer still has trouble with the DVD-ROM (however, not
the CD/RW). The third computer has no such problem,
although I think the DVD-ROM is the same model. All XP
upgrades were bought at the same time and updated to
SP1a, all updates except SP2.
The work-around I found was to remove the drive in the
device manager and scan for hardware changes. Then it
continues to work until the next reboot. Maybe somebody
has a better solution.
