Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)

I have a Toshiba Portege 4010 and the built in pointer mouse hardware
is damaged and well scroll across the screen at random, It is a
physical defect. I bought a USB mouse, however when i try and uninstall
the mouse in the BIOS, and in windows it keeps getting reinstalled I
even tried removing the i8042prt.sys file in hopes that it would not
open the port for the ps/2 compatable mouse! anyone got any ideas?

Go to Start...Run...and type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Scroll down the list until you find the pointing device, right click on it and select "disable" - this will disable it's use by Windows.

There also may be a setting in the BIOS to disable it from there.
