I have a DELL inspiron 6000 with an ALPS touchpad and When i first got it in
June, the scrolling feature worked fine. but i didn't use it for several
months and now the scroll isn't working....also, i didn't have my laptop w/
me so i don't know who used it so anyone could have done something....

please help....it's so annoying to do it the old fashioned way!!!

ps. i already went to the advanced settings for the touchpad and tried every
option for the "wheel" options

Go to Dell's website and download the latest touchpad drivers for your
specific model laptop. If installing updated drivers doesn't help, then
call Dell tech support. The touchpad may have failed.

Call Dell and have the tech walk you thru the settings.

The functionality is in the Alps application that loads at startup, if
it is like my Sony Alps pad. If that is disabled, it fails to work
properly.

I am having the same problem, after having made some adjustments to make my
computer start up faster. I must have disabled the ALPS application that
loads at start up. How do I find it and enable it again?

Thanks!

I hate it when people treat me like an idiot. I have the same problem on my
Inspiron 5150 notebook, and, of course, I've downloaded and tried every
Synaptics driver recommended for this machine. What's your next question?

The original post SAID that he had tried every "wheel" setting for the mouse.
Why don't you listen?

The snippet above on items loading on startup put 2 and 2 together for
me...
I had a bunch of extra junk loading on startup, so I wacked most of it
- one of those items was the application for the scroll bars.....

To see if this you too, go to Start -> Run -> msconfig
If you are on normal startup, this isn't your problem.
If you are set for diagnostic startup, reset to normal and restart.
If you are selective startup
- reset to normal, or
- check your startup tab - if "Apoint" isn't checked, check it
and restart... This fixed my issue - scroll bars be a workin again !

"most people want that turned off"

Really? I don't know why they would. It was a selling point for my HP
dv8000 laptop (which now has the same problem). Its much more
convenient to effortlessly point to the edge of the touchpad and scroll
the page up or down - without having to hunt for the page's scroll bar
and click on it in order to scroll. duh?

My touchpad is a Synaptics and the two apps running at startup are:
Sntpstart
Sntpenh

The non scrolling problem appears several times a day and is most
aggravating. Come on - its 2008! Can't anyone invent a touchpad that
actually works??

It's not that the scroll feature of the touchpad has stopped working. It's
just very difficult to use properly. If you don't land your finger in just
the right place it doesn't activate the scroll feature.
